Atelier d’Exception by Marlis produces some of the finest bespoke luxury handbags in the country. Her designer accessories are a necessity for women who look for distinctive, yet still classic handbags. Each bag is individually handmade with gorgeous leathers combined with beautiful jewels. We talk to Marlis about the inspiration behind the brand…

Firstly, can you tell us about the Atelier d’Exception by Marlis brand?
„By Marlis“ offers bespoke luxury handbags, which are all individually handcrafted with precious materials. I use leather skins like python, calf hair, fish and calf. The lining of the bags is made of goat suede. The attached jewels are plated with either 14 carat gold or ruthenium. Most of the jewels are combined with beautiful stones. All materials used are from high-quality sources in Europe, mainly Italy. My bags mirror a combination of classic elegance and extravagant shapes. As they are all individually crafted and they are only available in small quantities.
Did you always want to design handbags? Where did you start your career?
I have always been drawn to artful craftsmanship and the design and beauty involved in creating something different. I spent an intense time in Italy some years ago and visited leather factories and fell in love with the material. The feel and look of the different skins – the softness or the beautiful scaling – it’s magnificent. In combination with jewels, it can look even more appealing and distinctive. My interest in leather, jewellery and traditional craftsmanship emerged in the desire to combine them all into a very personal piece – a handbag that accompanies you for a long term.
My extensive background education in furniture and interior design was a big advantage when I started. It helped me during the pattern cutting process, the bag construction and generally the crafting with leather.

What is the inspiration behind your designs – do you focus on trends?
My inspiration comes from historical architecture and arty, elegant furniture. I love strong shapes and beautiful materials and colours. I don’t focus on trends, I prefer timeless, beautiful statement pieces. As I learned the traditional leather working methods in Italy, I am able to alter the design and the bag during the creation process to create special pieces which are unique.
What is your design philosophy?
I wanted to create handbags which are known for their detailed craftsmanship, gorgeous materials and exclusivity.
What do you think it is that makes Atelier d’Exception by Marlis appealing to your clients?
My clients look for individuality and differentiation – they look for “very own” pieces and appreciate unique pieces. They value the bespoke service and the possibility of choosing their jewel to go along with the preferred leather skin. They love the deep colours, the characteristics of the leather and of course, the different shape of the bag.

Out of all the beautiful collections and pieces you have produced, do you have a favourite?
Not really, however, I always favour the piece I am currently working on. I alter each handbag as long as it shows a unique, distinctive touch, so every piece is and stays something special.
What does British craftsmanship mean to you?
Tradition, long-standing quality, bespoke and artisanal – only a few of the characteristics which come to my mind. I admire British architecture and historical furniture, but British culture shows its beauty and manufacturing knowledge in a lot of other different craftsmanship areas.
Finally Marlis, we would love to know who inspires you in the world of design?
I am not inspired by one designer. There are so many beautiful works and surroundings to admire, which all have a certain influence. I enjoy travelling and a cultural life and all the impressions flow in the end into the development of a new design. I am not after design trends or colour trends, I believe in artful craftsmanship and a timeless, exclusive work.
