‘British luxury has a wonderful sense of purpose’

Books & Biographies House

Following the opening of  ‘What is Luxury?’ at the V&A, Beyond Bespoke founder and publisher of The Little Black Book of Luxury, Lucie Lewis, talks to The BB Edit about British luxury – and why we can’t get enough of it…

Lucie Lewis - Beyond Bespoke 'the best of British luxury'
What is it about British luxury that appeals to people?
British luxury is synonymous with exquisite craftsmanship, design, attention to detail and comfort. Its appeal lies in the fact that it is beautifully understated and has a wonderful sense of purpose. And it’s not just us Brits who appreciate it – Britishness is a huge draw for HNWIs across the world.

You can feel luxury, but if it’s good you can’t always see it

You’ve recently published Volume III of the Little Black Book of Luxury. Tell us more…
Yes, the latest volume is bigger than ever, and full of our favourite brands, from big names like Paul Smith and Belstaff to smaller artisan companies, such as Wardour Workshops and Strathberry of Scotland. We like to think of the Little Black Book as a passport to a secret world of British luxury, whether you are looking for a couturier to make that perfect dress, a designer to create a special one-off bespoke piece of furniture, or you need to speak to a connoisseur who’ll be able to inform your thirst for fine wines. For the security conscious, we even have a member who is a former Special Forces officer and will teach you self-defence. All our members take pride in their heritage and are at the very top of their game. It’s a privilege to be working with them.

How did you come to set up Beyond Bespoke?
I set up Beyond Bespoke in 2012 to bring together more than 260 of the best luxury British brands under one roof through our website, online magazine and Little Black Book of Luxury. Beyond Bespoke has been described as ‘one of the rare outlets demonstrating an accurate understanding of what wealthy people want’. I hope that says it all.

How would you sum up luxury?
Luxury is one of life’s rewards. It shouldn’t be judged by monetary value but by the pleasure it brings. You can feel luxury, but if it’s good you can’t always see it.

Can you name three British icons you most admire?
Winston Churchill for his indefatigable spirit; Alice Temperley for her design genius; and Paul Smith for his creative vision and integrity in whatever he does.

What is the future for British luxury?
It’s hard to make predictions but one thing is for sure: craftsmanship, quality and excellence are timeless and they will always remain the cornerstone of British luxury. There is only one Britain. We are unique.

And finally, what’s your everyday luxury?
Cuddles with my girls, walking Boris, our border terrier, and having supper made by my fiancé.
