Did you always want to be a fashion designer?
When I was 10 years old, I opened my mother’s closet and saw beautifully embroidered clothes from Pakistan. From then on I loved the glamour of modern evening wear mixed with the rich colours and luxurious fabrics, and I knew that one day I wanted to make wonderful gowns just like them. I then trained under distinguished British designer Elizabeth Emanuel, famed for creating Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress, and went on to launch my own brand in 1998.

Can you tell us about the Raishma brand? How did you start and what has been the evolution of the brand since your launch?
I started my brand with a vision of creating beautiful garments with a fusion inspired look. The brand was originally bespoke and couture and I focused on this for 10 years. However in recent years, the brand has evolved and expanded into also creating a pret range for high-street retailers.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
I like to fuse cultures together to create garments that are unique and distinctive. I use fabrics from the Eastern style scene but use Western and modern silhouettes that are in keeping with the lastest trends. I use authentic hand embroidery techniques too.

What makes you unique — what is it about Raishma that appeals to your clients?
My design aesthetic is very simple; I like to keep things minimal yet elegant. When I design, I design with real women in mind — what they’re conscious about and how to structure a dress to enhance their features. I think that’s so important when it comes to design because everyone is different.

Do you have a prestigious client list?
I have worked with many celebrities, influencers and members of the royal family such as Princess Beatrice. My client list is continuously growing as I become a recognised international brand.

Where can we find Raishma?
I have an online store and I am currently based in East Shopping Centre with a view to relocate to central London in the coming months. Raishma is also available online at John Lewis, House of Fraser, Wolf & Badger and in store at Wolf & Badger Notting Hill. I also recently showed my AW16 collection at London Fashion week and my SS16 collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Doha.

Do you have a favourite collection/piece?
My favourite collection is AW16. For this collection I went with an Ice Queen theme, using icy, ethereal tones and luxurious fabrics of silk, lace, velvet and georgette. The collection came together beautifully and is the collection I’m most proud of.

What does quality craftsmanship mean to you and your brand?
It’s so important to ensure that your garments are made with a meticulous attention to detail. A beautifully crafted and embellished dress is what makes the Raishma brand.

What’s next in 2016?
2016 has already been an incredible year and I hope to continue the growth of my brand and business even more. We recently launched in the Middle East and my plans are to continue along this path and become a global brand on the evening and bridal couture fashion scene.
