Five new fitness trends for the year ahead

Fitness Wellness

With the excesses of Christmas now behind us, it’s time to get fit and healthy. From body weight training to treadmill classes, here are the fitness trends that will be getting us in shape in 2015

Body weight training
Predicted to be the next big thing by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the idea is to use your own body weight as resistance, for instance press-ups, squats and lunges. Better still, it doesn’t require a gym membership or equipment. We can really see this one taking off.

HIIT
Although it has been knocked off the top spot by body weight training, high intensity interval training (HIIT) is predicted to be a popular choice for 2015. It involves mixing intervals of intense periods with slower recovery periods, resulting in burning more calories in a shorter space of time and getting fitter quicker. The intense element of the workout means a maximum of three sessions a week is recommended.

Treadmill classes
If the popularity of spinning is anything to go by, treadmill classes look set to take the UK by storm this year. In New York it has been introduced through the Mile High Run Club and has gained a huge following since its launch last October. It’s taught the same way as a spinning class with an instructor at the front and the additional use of weights such as kettlebells and interval training.

Taboga
A mixture of Tabata (also known as HIIT) and yoga, Taboga is the new kid on the block and is currently only available at Nordic Balance in London. The combination of cardio, conditioning and stretching means that you come out feeling both physically and mentally fitter.

Punk rope
A class that combines skipping, games and just general fun, punk rope originates from America with classes recently launched in the UK in Sheffield. Instructor Lisa Fairclough says, “The music and the group games makes you feel as though you are a kid in a playground again. People find the jump rope element quite difficult to begin with but love how they see themselves progress over time.” punkrope.com
