Fun family days out

It’s almost the February half-term, which means it’s time to start thinking of fun, family activities to fill the time with. It’s pretty chilly at this time of the year, so we’ve listed a few ideas for family days out with the kids that won’t be hindered by the British weather.

If you are in or around London this half term, the London Aquarium is a fun place to visit if the weather’s not so great. You can get face-to-face with over 10,000 sea creatures, including sharks, turtles, sting rays, and other exotic species of fish. The aquarium gives talks throughout the day, you can also take part in feeding time.

If you catch a sunny day during the February half term, Longleat is the perfect family day out. The safari park allows you get up close and personal with a variety of exotic beasts. The drive-through enclosures include Wolf Wood, Deer Park and Monkey Mahem, where you can get a closer look at the park’s many animals. Take a cruise on Half Mile Lake where you can feed the Sea Lions, or get hands on in the Animal Handling Hall.

The historic Tower of London, part of the Historic Royal Palaces, makes a great outing with the kids to learn about British cultural history. The castle provides a mix of culture and fun for the whole family to get involved in. Activities include the visiting the crown jewels, exploring the iconic White Tower built to strike fear into the population of London, the tower torture exhibition and discovering the fascinating stories of the exotic royal beasts in the Royal Managerie. Take a guided tour with the Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters) to find out more about the castles brutal past.

During the February school break the National Trust property Stourhead offers activities for both parents and children. The Behind Closed Doors tour explores areas of the house usually closed to the public. The tours change daily but can include the servants’ bedrooms in the roof, to a barrel run and mantrap in the cellar. Head to the Entrance Hall where you can enjoy a warming log fire, traditional board games and dressing up. Take a walk around Stourhead’s lake and world-famous garden, then grab a tasty seasonal treat from the restaurant.

The Harry Potter Studio Tour is a must for any fan of the fantasy series. The tour allows you to see many of the iconic sets, costumes and props that were created for the films. Have your picture taken on Platform 9 3/4, ride a broomstick or enjoy a tasty butterbeer in the Studio Cafe. Children are given a complimentary Activity Passport which includes a fun snitch hunt. You can also buy a souvenir or memento of your visit in the Studio Shop.
