‘If I could go anywhere this Christmas…’

Travel Wellness

Tamarind margaritas, fish tacos and a stunning private villa – Toni Fyvie picks Mexico as her favourite Christmas holiday destination

Dream destination?
Tulum, Mexico. I am a New Zealander, living in London, so warm, tropical Christmases are my preference.

Who would you go with?
My husband is Canadian, so Tulum is the perfect destination to meet up with our families from both New Zealand and Canada.

How would you get there?
British Airways fly direct to Cancun, and then it’s approximately 1h30 min transfer to Tulum.

Where would you stay?
The stunning private villa Casa Nalum (above), located inside the biosphere reserve of Sian Kaan – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is about 15 minutes from Tulum itself.

What would you eat?
Ceviche and fish tacos made with the fish that we have caught that morning, guacamole and spicy salsa, washed down with an icy cold Corona. I could eat this every day! And for Christmas Day itself, a cabrito (kid goat) cooked slowly on an open-fire spit.

What would you drink?
Tamarind margaritas, the perfect blend of sweet and sour. And to keep hydrated, either fresh coconut water or Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus tea – similar in flavour to cranberry).

What would you buy?
Beach cover-ups and the cookbook from my favourite Tulum restaurant, Hartwood, so I can instantly transport myself back there on cold, grey days in London.
