British heritage is at the heart of Mulberry’s sophisticated debut jewellery collection, designed by Creative Director Johnny Coca. Cue the Cabinet of Curiosities…
We’ve grown accustomed over the years to launches from Mulberry coming in the form of a much-anticipated new It-bag or a clothes collection. But now this most innovative of British brands has branched out into jewellery, with the new Cabinet of Curiosities collection inspired by Medieval and Victoriana costume jewels, fictional creatures and eye-catching gem stones.

One particular design story called ‘Bestiaire’ is iconically British and features a stag and fox head, referencing anthologies made popular in the Middle Ages. Bestiaries continue to give inspiration to coats of arms created in our time.

Victorian jewellery was preoccupied with a talisman or symbolism of particular precious gemstones. Designed to be worn as a single piece, the Princess earring (below) features Tiger’s Eye, a semi-precious stone symbolising protection and good fortune. The pure, round shape of the pearl and the gold sphere and disc are a reference to the symbol of eternity.

The story of the Stud design centres around dramatic, faceted gemstones set into gold or silver settings. The shape and style take inspiration from the ‘enchanted worlds’ of medieval and Victoria mythology and the symbolism of the gemstones used.
