Six interior design trends for 2016

Decorative Interiors House

From grandmother chic to polished plaster, these look set to be the biggest interior design trends for the year ahead

GRANDMOTHER CHIC
Needlepoint in particular will grow in popularity this year, working well with simple pared-back interiors. We’ll want it on our cushions and even our headboards in brighter deeper patterns. Check out Durslade Farmhouse in Somerset for inspiration or select the best in Fine Cell’s work. Handmade by prisoners and all proceeds go to charity.

PLASTERWORK
There was a time when we spent a lot in removing cornicing and the like from our homes but plasterwork is seeing a revival. And whereas some might choose a plaster relief by Peter Hone for our walls, others might prefer a finish such as Marmorino polished plaster, an ancient tecnique of marble dust and lime in a colour of your choice, which gives walls a textured natural sheen reminiscent of Venetian palazzos. www.perucchetti.com

HANDCRAFTED
The epitome of chic is bespoke and by that we mean something that has been handcrafted to our very own requirements. We want to be able to run our hands along a piece and feel the craftsmanship. Where better place to start than in the kitchen where counters can be made to according our height to prevent backache and we can design our very own pantry. www.halstock.com

PATTERN
Continuing the folky trend pattern is seeping further and further into our homes and tiles in particular are a great way of introducing colour to a minimalist interior. Try them on the floor as an alternative to a patterned rug. www.bertandmay.com

PROVENANCE
Our quest to seek out new British skilled makers will continue as we discover new producers and buy their one-off pieces. Just a few of the names to look out for will include Jono Smart for his pottery, Luke Hope for his woodenwares, Rachel Vosper for her candles, Michael Ruh for his glass lights (below).

They’re back, although for some of us they probably didn’t go away. But our love for cosy retreats has taken on a revival only this time we’re not talking sheds we’re talking bespoke love nests with all the mod cons we can harbour. www.plankbridge.com
