The bright, beautiful simplicity of daffodils, extended lunches and egg painting – in the first of a new monthly column, floral designer Elizabeth Marsh explains why Easter is such a special time of year
Today the sun has been shining and spring finally seems to be making itself known to us poor, be-clouded, be-drizzled Londoners. So will you be off to church on Sunday? Or does Easter mean a chance to sleep in and eat chocolate without feeling guilty for a change?
For me, Easter is the herald of daffodils (yellow is my favourite colour). Their bright, beautiful simplicity represents some of the great things about the British countryside. I grew up in the rolling fields of Hampshire, picking primroses along the forest tracks as we walked the dogs and sang and danced and laughed, and forced my poor father to tell us endless stories about anything at all…

A bygone era of innocence? Perhaps, but if the terrorism that is plaguing our lives and our horizons at the moment has achieved anything, I think it is a return to the simple things: eating an extended lunch with the family, long walks in the beautiful countryside that surrounds and envelopes London (with over 65% of its area green, London actually qualifies to be made into a National Park), enjoying the snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils that brighten up the day.
If the children are grown-up and beyond the delights of painting Easter eggs, they certainly won’t be beyond the delights of eating the chocolate ones and a sense of wholesomeness descends when the ‘tribe’ gathers for a ritual celebration at the moment when the days are finally starting to lengthen and I don’t feel I am getting up in the middle of the night any longer…

Of course the week started well with a team building workshop for the crew at Clive Christian who came to visit the studio and ended by making little posies that they could take back to the office and enjoy as they went about their day. Since we used the flowers from their latest perfume ranges, we saw their joyous expressions as they saw their products come to life before their eyes!

So whether you are sleeping off the parties from the night before, gorging on chocolate and simnel cake or escaping to the great outdoors this weekend I wish you a vey joyous, peaceful and love-filled Easter.
Elizabeth Marsh serves a wide range of customers with weekly flowers, flowers for events and bouquet deliveries across London and the rest of the world, whilst her workshops have proved highly popular in London and New York
