The best of autumn flowers

Florists House

As our gardens change into gorgeous shades of red, deep purple and gold, we ask three of the best of British flower designers to share their favourite autumn flowers and trends

Nicky Llewellyn Flowers
My favourite part about autumn is how beautiful coloured leaves, berries, twigs and hops can add drama to other flowers. Eye-popping brightly coloured dahlias in dark purples, cerise pink and flaming orange look great mixed together. Into winter, adding scented flowers and foliage from the garden such as winter honeysuckle, viburnum, daphne, witch hazel and clematis armandii to white painted birch twigs, pussy willow, hellebores, hyacinths, scented narcissi and ivy berries makes a natural and deliciously scented combination. Trend-wise, I think the ‘made it myself’ and ‘just picked’ feel is continuing, but also sourcing more unusual containers, particularly with a nod to the 1970s.

In the spirit of Christmas, I am doing a Festive Party Flowers course on November 17 in conjunction with Lisa Osman at All Hallows, Dorset. For more information, go to allhallowsfarmhouse.co.u

Bloomingdale Flowers
Dahlias are popular blooms this autumn – they are walking out of the market by the bucket load and are so full of vibrant colours, but this will change once the weather turns as they are grown outdoors. What I love most about autumn flowers are the warm colours, the ever-changing leaves and berries, mixed with the rich reds and oranges, producing a powerful clash of colour. This autumn is seeing a strong consistency in bridal choices for low trestle tables (ousting the now unfashionable round table), with a more natural flow of flowers down the table, interspersed with night lights and an array of vases at different levels.

Elizabeth Marsh Floral Design
There are some stunning blooms around at the moment; crabapples are on the scene and the gorgeous burgundy cotinus. My favourite part about autumn flowers are the rich colours and the move towards more minimalist winter designs with the sculptural element of fruits and berries.

I’ve noticed co-ordination is really popular this year and, particularly with our brides, really tastefully put together ensembles are very popular. We are now being asked to provide tableware such as cloths, glassware and charger plates so there is a coherent scheme that really works with the flowers.
