A-Z OF BRITISH ETIQUETTE
The A-Z of British Etiquette has been fairly wide-ranging, hopefully showing that etiquette isn’t just about how to eat asparagus. It involves more contemporary aspects, such as online etiquette or dealing delicately with our furry friends.
There are, of course, many more areas that we could have covered and our rundown is by no means comprehensive: no book, guide or manual ever will be as etiquette. The way in which we comport ourselves in social and professional environments changes almost on a minute-to-minute basis. The telephone changed communication in a way no one thought possible, then along came portable telephones, email and then Twitter: each new tool meant we had to adapt our behaviour and reasoning as to what was acceptable – but still holding dear those basic principles of respecting others and putting people at ease. In the last week we now have Periscope, a new social media app from the same people who brought us Twitter – this too will lead to a slight shift in our behaviours.
We can’t ever know everything and there will be situations where you are at an event and you are truly flummoxed as to how to politely navigate yourself and others away from trouble. One solution is to watch the most learned guest at the table, party or boardroom and copy their behaviour. Even if they don’t get it exactly right, if they are doing it, they will think it correct and so you can bluff too… and then get home and consult a book… doesn’t have to be mine, of course, but it’d be a start…The Bluffer’s Guide to Etiquette
