Behind the Brief: Naturally Wood Floors

Decorative Interiors House Interior Designers

Matthew Oatham, director of Naturally Wood Floors, explains how the subtle nuances of colour, sheen level, texture and finish came together to create a show-stopping range of bespoke floors for one West London residential project

What was the project?
A selection of bespoke floors for a high-end residential project in Lansdowne Road, working with Studio Indigo and Delcon Construction. The project called for a variety of floors, finishes and methods of installation to address individual areas, but which worked together.

Studio Indigo selected our elegant Castelle Weave design, produced in traditional parquet, aged and enriched to replicate an old, worn floor in two slightly differing tones, both with a bespoke white grained finish hand applied on site. For other areas, wide engineered boards were selected, which we prefinished in-house — some with a gentle white, others with a more rugged “industrial” feel which again had been aged and prefinished with a touch of white.

What was the biggest challenge?
Getting the subtle nuances of colour, sheen level, texture and finish right. Also, the layouts had to be absolutely spot-on. Ensuring floor directions lined up with key architectural features within the room areas was critical.  In particular, one area of plank flooring needed to line up with the centre of several areas that the floor was running through, including a lift car. Keeping minute tolerances in subfloor levels was essential, particularly when our floors met with adjoining areas with marble floor finishes.

What are you most pleased with?
We are exceptionally pleased with the finishes on this particular project. Completing a project of this quality is always satisfying — ensuring each aspect of our involvement meets the exacting standards of the main contractor and critical eye of the design team involved.

Client involvement – hands on or hands-off?
Although the client wasn’t directly involved, the main contractors, Delcon Construction, and the architects/designers, Studio Indigo, were very much hands-on. Their high standards were apparent throughout each stage of the project.

What next?
Our team’s busier than ever. We’re working with Studio Indigo on two more highly prestigious residential development in Upper Phillimore Gardens and in Brentwood, Essex. Again, our bespoke prefinished engineered floors are being used extensively. We’re also working on several interesting commercial projects in Central London.

We’re constantly developing new colours and finishes for both our pre-finished engineered and traditional site finished floors. We’ve recently created some exciting new finishes for our Inception end grain floors, which we’re exceptionally pleased with.
