The changing face of cosmetic beauty

Beauty Hair & Beauty Wellness

Dr Elisabeth Dancey from Bijoux MediSpa talks to The BB Edit about two new cosmetic beauty treatments that promise to restore volume lost over time

Elizabeth Dancey

Can you explain what happens to our face as we age?
As we get older our skin starts to look tired and lose its volume. It’s a process that starts at around the age of 28 but is more noticeable when you reach 35-40, with the appearance of mouth lines and darker shadows. People are more likely to comment that you are looking tired, and you don’t feel as perky and bright as you did in your twenties. At the age of 55-plus the skin starts to stretch and sag, and women increasingly turn to fillers.

How can lost volume be restored?
In the past, permanent threads would be injected under the skin to create added volume, which could cause problems with nerve and vessel compression. Now, excitingly, for the first time we are able to restore volume and give a very natural lift using the V Soft Lift and Silhouette Soft, which spell the end of the ‘pillow face’.

What is Silhouette Soft?
It’s a new treatment for the face that immediately gives the soft tissues a physical lift of about 1cm, redefining and refreshing the face, and stimulating the body to restore lost collagen so that wrinkles are reduced and volume is increased. The Silhouette Soft suture is a thread with bidirectional cones spaced on it – rather like beads on a necklace. After a small amount of local anaesthetic has been applied, the Silhouette Soft suture is introduced via a micro-needle and threaded under the skin. Once it’s in place I tighten the thread to achieve the most natural smooth look possible and to give an instant lift. The treatment takes 30 minutes and is tailor-made, so it can be used on areas where it is needed most, such as a saggy jaw, the neck, the eyebrow or the cheeks. It can also be used in conjunction with fillers and Botox.

And the V Soft Lift?
This is a revolutionary new cosmetic threading treatment from Sweden which we have just launched at Bijoux MediSpa – around 60 ultra-fine threads are threaded under the skin, which generates new collagen and increases volume when the new collagen shrinks. The face is lifted by the Silhouette and rounded out by the V Soft Lift, so I like to combine the two. The quality and look is amazing – you end up with more youthful-looking, peachy skin.

Threads are the new buzz word, even though they have existed in previous guises for over 20 years. The joy of this new treatment is that it is quick, delivers immediate natural results and is minimally invasive. It can be used as a preventative treatment on young clients as well as deliver really effective lift and volume addition on older clients and is a big step forward for my industry.

Can you talk us through the procedure? Is it painful, for example?
We start off by applying a numbing local anaesthetic cream, which is followed by the Silhouette and the V Soft. On the pain scale I would say it is 4 out of 10; uncomfortable rather than painful, with a little swelling, but after a cup of tea you are free to go home. The down time period is roughly two weeks, as there will be a bit of bruising, but we give a concealer to disguise it. The results peak in about three months’ time, and we advise repeating it about 18 months later.

How important is it to support the treatment with a healthy lifestyle?
Very. I always ask people what they eat and find out about their lifestyle. My advice is always to eat plenty of protein, fruit and vegetables. Looking after yourself after the treatment is all part of the process.
